The fifth annual Bloomington Bioneers Conference will take place on the beautifully wooded campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. As the Bloomington Bioneers conference begins to take form for this fall, we find that this is a very exciting time for the Bloomington community, both for the university and the city as we examine and adopt best practices in regard to environmental sustainability. On January 8, 2007, a The recent Bloomington Environmental Quality Indicator (BEQI) report found that Bloomington is moving in the right direction but there is much work to be done. City government has acknowledged this reality and has taken bold initiatives: the formation of a Commission on Sustainability, signing on to the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement, and City Council resolutions in support of the Kyoto Protocol. Our city is blessed with an aware and proactive citizenry and numerous non-profit groups such as the Center for Sustainable Living and the new Caldwell Center for Culture and Ecology.
On the University campus, the Indiana University Task Force for Campus Sustainability was established in February 2007 and began its work in March. Join us this fall at the Bioneers conference as we explore the solutions and wisdom already present in our community and region.

Santa Fe's rich history runs deep, being the oldest state capital and the second oldest city in the U.S. New Mexico has a rich history of community sustainability. Numerous Pueblo communities nearby continue their ancient traditions and are tremendous contributors to community knowledge about sustainable practices, as are many northern Hispanic communities, which trace their ancestry back 400 years.

Through a series of community outreach meetings this spring and summer, the planning committee will help develop a series of workshops that reflect the concerns of the multicultural communities in the "Land of Enchantment." Some of the key topics include Food and Farming, Renewable Energy, and Social Justice. Youth involvement is particularly important to the conference organizers, as well as our need to honor the wisdom of the elders in our communities.
