Alaskans from all over The Great Land will gather at the University of Alaska - Anchorage for the third annual Bioneers in Alaska. Our vision is to stimulate local dialogue and action on all aspects of sustainability. Local keynotes will include Jeffrey Smith, author of Seeds of Deception, and Andrea Carmen, director of the International Indian Treaty Council. Lunches are made from local, organic food, including Copper River Salmon. A “Junior Bioneers” program and Native Elder Wisdom Circle complement workshops on Corporations and Democracy, Global Warming, Reproductive Health and Justice, Energy Independence, Non-Violent Communication, Backyard Biodiesel, Walking Away from Cars, and more.

The fourth annual Bloomington Bioneers Conference will take place on the beautifully wooded campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. The IU Fine Arts Auditorium will play host to the beamed plenary speeches and workshops will take place in adjacent classrooms and outdoors, weather permitting. Our keynote speaker is Tony Hiss, the author of the celebrated "The Experience of Place", New Yorker staff writer, and NYU scholar. Other activities include a silent auction fundraiser and Dance Party with the Afro Hoosiers, Mt. Gilead Retreat bioregional nature walk and nature journaling exercise. In addition we will be presenting the first annual Bioneer awards to individuals nominated by our community who represent creative and positive work in the area of ecological sustainability.

Bioneers comes to Boulder where the Rockies meet the High Plains – creating community opportunities for sharing, learning and action, and bringing together the region’s progressive people and organizations. The 4th Colorado Bioneers features the Green Living Expo; film, music and arts; networking; children’s eco-activities; and sessions and workshops addressing topics of regional importance. Sessions include relocalization strategies, ecosystem restoration, youth leadership, food and farming, small business, ecological medicine, green building and new urbanism, environmental justice, teaching sustainability. The 4th Annual Northern Rockies Bioneers Conference (NRBC) will take place at the Emerson Cultural Center in the heart of Bozeman. The NRBC will highlight 25 workshops including Sustainable Community Design, Pesticide Free Parks, Children's Environmental-Based Education, Farms to Restaurants program, Double-Decker Bio-Bus Project, Sustaining Community events, and Kyoto Treaty in Montana and Beyond. We will celebrate with an Aerial Art Project, Reel 2 Real Film Festival, music with Michael Franti & Spearhead, local farm meals, OPI credits for Montana teachers, and a lifetime of education and inspiration.

The third Heartland Bioneers Conference continues to build upon good relationships between the Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and the City of Carbondale. Last year, discussion panels on the “Greening” of the City and University led to an update to the campus sustainability report – planned for unveiling this October. Local programming themes this year will emphasize Food and Energy and include highlights such as “Meet the Farmer” lunches, discussions on local food security, testimonials about Appalachian mountaintop removal (MTR) coal mining, and much more. The 3rd Oregon Bioneers conference is a vibrant hub of sustainable solutions, a platform to promote and celebrate bioregional leadership, and a place to declare your citizenship in Salmon Nation. Featuring keynote addresses by Mary Wood, Founding Director of Environmental and Natural Resources Law at U of O; Cylvia Hayes, Founder of 3E Strategies in Bend; and Pramod Parajuli, Founder of Portland International Initiative for Leadership in Ecology, Culture and Learning (PIIECL) at PSU. Workshops focus on Oregon Watersheds, Multicultural Sustainability, Renewable Energy, Food Systems, Health, Environmental Education, Youth Leadership and More. Films will be screened daily. Northern Arizona University and Prescott College will be co-hosting the 5th Arizona Bioneers conference, which will be held for the first time on the Northern Arizona University campus in Flagstaff. From Navajo and Hopi land in the North, to the urban metropolis of Phoenix, to the thriving sustainable communities in Tucson in the South, the Bioneers conference will bring people together and provide a forum to share hopes, thoughts and dreams for bringing a new world into reality. The first Hawaii Bioneers Conference of the Pacific (HBCP) aims to create community stories of practical environmental solutions and innovative social strategies for restoration of harmony between humanity and the earth. HBCP will bring together Hawaii’s leaders in eco-activism to converse on crucial campaigns for the future of the aina. The panels and presentations focusing on the imminent issues of the islands will be complemented with visits to existing projects, allowing people to move beyond discussion toward direct action to save the planet one ahupuaa at a time. Organized by Blackwood Educational Land Institute and a committee of enthusiastic partners, the 4th Texas Bioneers Conference will be breaking paradigms, sharing organic foods, Mountain Valley Water, and awesome stories. The conference will be held on campus of the University of Houston and feature environmental attorney Jim Blackburn, Brandi Clark, Legacy Land Trust Dir. Jennifer Lorenz, Richie Ahuja of Environmental Defense, Shib Nath De from India and others. Session topics include energy conservation, biodiesel, permanent land protection, green building, holistic health, sowing the seeds of sustainability, a musical on the USA health care system, a participatory art project, a contra dance at the recently built LEED Montessori School, plus 300 youth scholarships!

The 3rd annual Utah Bioneers conference will be held at Utah State University (USU) in Logan, with additional satellite conferences at two USU regional campuses: Brigham City and Vernal. International global warming expert Rocky Anderson, mayor of Salt Lake City, and Montana’s Daniel Kemmis, one of America’s best thinkers and writers on sustainable communities will keynote in Logan. 20 workshops range from clean air and water; healthy families; food security; sustainable communities; celebrating diversity – fostering unity; and growth and transportation. A 2005 Utah Bioneers attendee told us, “I can’t remember any event that has moved and informed me so much.” We know the feeling, and are excited to be expanding our Bioneers coverage of the state this year!

The first Northland Bioneers Conference, brought to residents of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa by Northland Sustainable Solutions, is excited to be one of the new kids on the block. This five-state region has a reputation for fostering a healthy planet and healthy people. 750 people are expected to attend the satellite plenaries, local keynotes, workshops, arts/entertainment, films, and youth events. Minneapolis Community and Technical College, host of the conference, is located near beautiful Loring Park (plenty of nature around to inspire solutions). By collaborating with dozens of community and business leaders, the conference is bound to boost sustainable solutions and activity region-wide in the coming year.

For the 2nd year, New Mexico Bioneers come together in Taos to continue motivating and inspiring each other to preserve our ecosystems, livelihoods, and traditions. Taos is home to earthships and old adobes; one of the first solar-powered radio stations, KTAO; and the longest-settled community in the U.S. – Taos Pueblo – a World Heritage site and lesson in sustainable community. Our growing season is short and yet small family agriculture, sustainable and traditional, is a living element of our eco and social systems. Grassroots leaders and innovators will engage in a community dialogue about energy footprints, coalition-building, rainwater harvesting, restoring the land and water commons, youth engaged in global/local learning, farming and food security, restoring ourselves. Activities also include educational field trips and an interactive art exhibit.

Great Lakes Bioneers enters its 5th year in Traverse City deepening relationships with Bioneers headwaters and with our neighbors. Coordinated by the Neahtawanta Center, SEEDS, and a slew of other professional volunteers, we’ll be serving local foods to the lucky, offering dancing to the democratic, and featuring fair-trade libations for the masses. The revolution has childcare, youth training grounds, media connectivity, and that special Bioneer crossroads synergy.
